ABOUT SALICYLATES

Salicylates are naturally-occurring chemicals in many fruits and vegetables that protect against predators and disease. Salicylates are also found in drugs that contain salicylic acid. A small percentage of people experience a negative reaction after consuming high salicylate foods, causing symptoms like nasal sores, asthma, rhinitis, gastrointestinal inflammation, diarrhea, and hives. For those with a salicylate intolerance, it’s important to avoid medications and skin products that contain salicylates, including aspirin, bismuth subsalicylate, choline salicylate, diflunisal, magnesium salicylate, and salsalate.
